Xu-Fu is looking for some tech help

PAGE UPDATE - BY ARANESH
Update Oct 2021: Unfortunately the before mentioned path forward didn't work out, so I'm still / again looking for help with this task.

Update: A good number of people have reached out and offered help and I have settled on a path forward for now. It'll take a while to decide which new hosting service to go with and will update you all once a date for server move is set. Thanks so much to everyone who has reached out!

Most of you will know that Xu-Fu is struggling with downtimes here and there. It's been going on for a long time and despite many improvements, it's still happening. I want to finally solve this problem because this community is amazing, has been amazing to me, and deserves better :-)

I know there's something borked on the web hosting side and I want to move the entire page to a different web hoster. And that's where I need help with. This is a once-off paid job and I'd really like to give it to someone who'd benefit a lot from this type of odd job right now, not a big company or such. Covid has been hard on many people, I'd love to help with this if possible.

Are you interested or know someone who might fit the bill? Please read on for some more technical details.

1. Tech background

Xu-Fu is currently on a server with shared hosting, meaning that there are multiple customers on the same server (part of the problem, it seems).
I have an admin panel with various settings (like managing SQL databases, cronjobs, FTP accesses etc.), but I do not have root access to the server and can't execute any shell commands. I have also never done that so no idea how to set up a server from scratch or manage that side of things. I work through FTP, phpmyadmin and the admin panel. And ideally I'd like to keep it that way - if possible. If it's not possible, the job would include teaching me how to access and manage a server more directly.

2. The job

  • You know your way around the web hosting landscape
  • Take a look at what's currently in place
  • Recommend a different web hoster that you know can deliver a better experience
  • Explain to me how the new setup would look like (so I can estimate if I can work with that)
  • If needed, teach me how to admin the new server
  • Then, together with me, move the entire page over to the new service

Sounds like something you can do? Send me an email to [email protected] or poke me on Discord with a tiny little intro who you are and why you'd like this job. No need to go into great length. We can discuss more details, the scope of this task and the pay in chat then.

check out https://my.abivia.net/ They owner really cares about his clients and goes way beyond whats required. Almost zero down time. I work with a designer who hosts there so this is first hand knowledge.

Not sure if it's only me and if ANYTHING changes since last post, but right now I noticed downtimes even MORE common and painfull than they were :(. Is it ONLY me or its just as it must be atm? Please let me know as I'm not sure what's the story. PS. Happens on all of those: Safari, Opera and Mozilla [TOR Mozilla included] (not using Chrome, will never use).

Can confirm, it's not just you :/ And that despite traffic being comparably low right now. It is definitely on the web hosting side, not on yours or any of ours. *sigh*
Working on it. Slow progress, but we'll get there!

We moved to a dedicated server with Peopleshost and they magically fix anything I tried to fix :P just sayin'. I hope you find someone/something good - for all our sakes LOL. xxxx <3 (and thank you for not giving up).

A dedicated server would be your best option. Shared Hosting is not the way to go for a site like this. With dedicated you can even go loadbalanced in the long run (if needed). You can get a good performing Dedicated server for around 10 to 20 bugs a month (with Vultr, Digitalocen or upcloud).
Unfortunatly you need at least some kind of Linux skills if you want to keep the site going. (Btw FTP is insecure as hell, i hope you do use sFTP at least). Can you tell a bit more about the tech background? What do you need? Apache/Nginx - PHP - MySQL i guess - anything else?

SSL, Email, Cronjobs.... I think that's it.
Would you be open to discussing more details on Discord? Aranesh#6150 :-)

A quick solution might be to use Cloudflare (free, cloudflare.com ) for DNS level content caching and DDoS protection. This might provide enough relief in the short-term while you work on additional, long-term solutions (ex: moving hosts). Given the work you've done to set this site up already, this is probably within your technical knowledge as well.

While I don't have the bandwidth for this job, I hope this helps out. (edited)

This sounds like a great opportunity for the community, i'm currently studying Data Science so my area is more around the data than hosting etc - but i'd be more than happy to give help when I can around Linux commands :)

Hi Aranesh, I sent you an email link to someone who can help you, but he also has to work around his job so there might be a few days delay before he can meet with you. Give him a try as this is right up his alley.

The best would be to find someone able to work for free , then spend this money on a good hosting partner. Hope someone will be able to help in order to improve this amazing website :)

Hey, thanks :)
Money is not the problem in this. Sure, I don't have endless funds, but I'm happy to pay for a good provider AND for someone to help me. Chances are I've been paying way too much for the current hosting service anyway.... ^^'
